Banking Sector's Holdings Of Government Debt

June 20, 2014
Excel Sheet

Although Central European countries are less indebted than their West-European neighbours on the public front, their banks are more involved in the funding of the government debt. Based on the data from the ECB and Eurostat, banks in Slovakia, Estonia, Romania, Slovenia, Bulgarian and the Czech Republic hold around a third of the total government debt.

That's compared to only 17% in France, or less than 3% in denmark, for example.
