Banking | Czechia | September 26, 2014

Excel Sheet

Czech banks belong to the most profitable ones in the world. In 2000-2012, their ROE reached nearly 14% on average. High market concentration is one of the reasons for the superior profitability. The three largest banks (CSOB, Ceska Sporitelna and Komercni Banka) have been dominating the market, especially in the area of retail banking where they hold 60-70% market share in the key products.

Based on the data by the Central Bank, the trio produced return on Tier1 capital exceeding 20% in 2013, twice as much when compared to the mid-sized banks while the small banks were loss-making in 2013.

Size matters, after all!
