Based on a comparison of 75 countries in 2014, China ranked the highest in horse meat production with 195,000 tonnes followed by Kazakhstan and Mexico. On the other end of the scale was Bulgaria with 1.00 tonnes, Luxembourg with 4.00 tonnes and Madagascar with 6.00 tonnes.
Total horse meat production reached 751,339 tonnes in 2014 in the World according to Faostat. This is 1.29 % less than in the previous year and -1.85 % less than 10 years ago.
Historically, total horse meat production reached an all time high of 794,484 tonnes in 2001 and an all time low of 454,090 tonnes in 1983. The average annual growth amounted to 0.558 % since 1961.
The top ranked country, China, accounted for 26.0 % of horse meat production in the world. The top 3 countries hold a 49.4 % share while the ten largest countries some 75.8 % in 2014.
