Based on a comparison of 15 countries in 2014, Czech Republic ranked the highest in poppy seed production with 24,665 tonnes followed by Turkey and Spain. On the other end of the scale was Macedonia with 75.0 tonnes, Netherlands with 384 tonnes and Bulgaria with 500 tonnes.
Total poppy seed production reached 76,213 tonnes in 2014 in the World according to Faostat. This is 15.3 % more than in the previous year and 13.8 % more than 10 years ago.
Historically, total poppy seed production reached an all time high of 108,025 tonnes in 2011 and an all time low of 20,834 tonnes in 1987. The average annual growth amounted to 0.697 % since 1961.
The top ranked country, Czech Republic, accounted for 32.4 % of poppy seed production in the world. The top 3 countries hold a 68.1 % share while the ten largest countries some 106 % in 2014.
