Based on a comparison of 73 countries in 2014, Tanzania ranked the highest in sesame seed production with 1,138,920 tonnes followed by India and Sudan. On the other end of the scale was Cyprus with 1.00 tonnes, Japan with 11.0 tonnes and Jordan with 16.0 tonnes.
Total sesame seed production reached 4,592,908 tonnes in 2014 in the World according to Faostat. This is 3.57 % less than in the previous year and 24.1 % more than 10 years ago.
Historically, total sesame seed production reached an all time high of 4,756,752 tonnes in 2013 and an all time low of 1,419,988 tonnes in 1961. The average annual growth amounted to 2.24 % since 1961.
