Based on a comparison of 44 countries in 2014, Nigeria ranked the highest in yam production with 45,004 kt followed by Ghana and Ivory Coast. On the other end of the scale was Cayman Islands with 0.026 kt, Trinidad and Tobago with 0.103 kt and Belize with 0.104 kt.
Total yam production reached 53,485 kt in 2014 in the World according to Faostat. This is 17.9 % less than in the previous year and 12.2 % more than 10 years ago.
Historically, total yam production reached an all time high of 63,051 kt in 2013 and an all time low of 8,314 kt in 1962. The average annual growth amounted to 3.57 % since 1961.
The top ranked country, Nigeria, accounted for 84.1 % of yam production in the world. The top 3 countries hold a 108 % share while the ten largest countries some 122 % in 2014.
