Regional Development in Adjara

Language: English
Provider: Caucasus Analytical Digest
Pages: 12
This issue examines the Adjara population's attitudes toward the region's development since Georgia’s 2003 Rose Revolution. On the basis of survey data, Nana Papiashvili finds an overall positive attitude among Adjarian citizens towards recent developments, in particular, infrastructure projects, even if some key social issues remain unresolved. Martin Demant Frederiksen nuances this positive picture on the basis of an ethnographic study of young people's attitudes and finds that local perceptions of governmental development projects are also characterized by insecurity and suspicion, in particular, uncertainty regarding the real benefactors of such projects.
