The economic and financial crisis has been taking its toll and changed many people's behavior. Living on the debt has become more difficult as consumers have less money to spend and banks are more cautious at providing funding.

The chart describes how penetration of credit cards has changed since 2007 when the crisis started. Not surprisingly, Greece stands out here with nearly a 30% fall in number of credit cards issued.

On the other hand, penetration of credit cards varies significantly among the countries. While 9 out of 10 citizens of the UK have a credit card in their wallets, only 4% of Germans use credit cards.
