Bank of Communications's non-performing loans reached 1.51% of total loans at the end of 2018, down from 1.52% compared to the previous year. Historically, the NPL ratio hit an all time high of 4.67% in 2002 and an all time low of 1.01% in 2011.

Provision coverage amounted to 153% at the end of 2018, up from 151% compared to a year earlier.

Comparing Bank of Communications with its closest peers, Home Credit China operated at the end of 2018 with NPL ratio of 1.57% and provision coverage of 788%, Qudian with 16.7% and 118% respectively and Lexin FinTech had 2.62% of bad loans covered with 213% by provisions at the end of 2018.
