Bank of Communications's non-performing loans reached 1.51% of total loans at the end of 2018, down from 1.52% compared to the previous year. Historically, the NPL ratio hit an all time high of 4.67% in 2002 and an all time low of 1.01% in 2011.
Provision coverage amounted to 153% at the end of 2018, up from 151% compared to a year earlier.
The bank created loan loss provisions worth of 0.957% of average loans in 2018. That's compared to 0.765% of loans the bank put aside to its cost on average in the last five years.
Comparing Bank of Communications with its closest peers, Home Credit China operated at the end of 2018 with NPL ratio of 1.57% and provision coverage of 788%, Qudian with 16.7% and 118% respectively and Lexin FinTech had 2.62% of bad loans covered with 213% by provisions at the end of 2018.
