Foreign debt reached 5,448 USD bil in 2016 in Iran, according to the National Statistical Office. This is 13.2 % less than in the previous year.

Historically, foreign debt in Iran reached an all time high of 23,392 USD bil in 1993 and an all time low of 3,969 USD bil in 1981. When compared to Iran's main peers, foreign debt in Pakistan amounted to 72,157 USD bil and 509 USD bil in Turkmenistan in 2016.
