Historically, foreign trade as a share of GDP in Nicaragua reached an all time high of 115% in 2012 and an all time low of 25.5% in 1987. When compared to Nicaragua's main peers, foreign trade as a share of GDP in Costa Rica amounted to 66.0%, 77.2% in El Salvador, 96.6% in Honduras and 77.9% in Mexico in 2019.
