Based on a comparison of 13 banks in Austria in 2017, Erste Group Bank had the highest share of bad loans, followed by Raiffeisenlandesbank Steiermark and Raiffeisen Bank Int..

Erste Group Bank's non-performing loans reached 5.56% of total loans at the end of 2017, down from 6.47% when compared to the previous year. Historically, the NPL ratio hit an all time high of 12.4% in 2013 and an all time low of 2.17% in 2000.

Provision coverage amounted to 5.08% at the end of 2017, down from 6.43% compared to a year earlier.

Comparing Erste Group Bank with its closest peers, Raiffeisenlandesbank Steiermark operated at the end of 2017 with NPL ratio of 5.08% and provision coverage of 72.0%, Raiffeisen Bank Int. with 5.05% and 67.1% and Steiermarkische Sparkasse had 4.29% of bad loans covered with 59.2% by provisions at the end of 2017.

Non-performing loans of the whole Austria’s banking sector amounted to 2.37% of total loans in 2017, down from 2.70% when compared to the last year.
