Based on a comparison of 10 banks in Romania in 2016, CEC Bank had the highest share of bad loans, followed by Alpha Bank Romania and Piraeus Bank Romania.
CEC Bank's non-performing loans reached 15.0% of total loans at the end of 2016, down from 21.5% when compared to the previous year. Historically, the NPL ratio hit an all time high of 31.0% in 2013 and an all time low of 15.0% in 2016.
Provision coverage amounted to 13.7% at the end of 2016, down from 16.6% compared to a year earlier.
Comparing CEC Bank with its closest peers, Alpha Bank Romania operated at the end of 2016 with NPL ratio of 13.7% and provision coverage of 68.0%, Piraeus Bank Romania with 13.5% and 54.1% and UniCredit Tiriac Bank had 12.9% of bad loans covered with 47.8% by provisions at the end of 2016.
Non-performing loans of the whole Romania’s banking sector amounted to 9.62% of total loans in 2016, down from 13.5% when compared to the last year.
