Historically, number of prisoners in Lithuania reached an all time high of 14,207 persons in 1999 and an all time low of 7,355 persons in 2015. When compared to Lithuania's main peers, number of prisoners in Estonia amounted to 2,823 persons and 4,409 persons in Latvia in 2015.
Lithuania has been ranked 64th within the group of 105 countries we follow in terms of number of prisoners, 16 places above the position seen 10 years ago.
The prison population is defined as the total number of adult and juvenile prisoners (including pre-trial detainees), including offenders held in Prison Administration facilities, other facilities, institutions for juvenile offenders and for drug addicts and psychiatric or other hospitals.
