Number of prisoners reached 177,262 persons in 2015 in Turkey, according to the United Nations. This is 11.7 % more than in the previous year.

Historically, number of prisoners in Turkey reached an all time high of 177,262 persons in 2015 and an all time low of 24,166 persons in 1991. When compared to Turkey's main peers, number of prisoners in Bulgaria amounted to 7,408 persons and 9,716 persons in Greece in 2015.

Turkey has been ranked 6th within the group of 105 countries we follow in terms of number of prisoners, 17 places above the position seen 10 years ago.

The prison population is defined as the total number of adult and juvenile prisoners (including pre-trial detainees), including offenders held in Prison Administration facilities, other facilities, institutions for juvenile offenders and for drug addicts and psychiatric or other hospitals.
