Number of prisoners reached 17,811 persons in 2015 in Panama, according to the United Nations. This is 19.7 % more than in the previous year.

Historically, number of prisoners in Panama reached an all time high of 17,811 persons in 2015 and an all time low of 10,217 persons in 2008. When compared to Panama's main peers, number of prisoners in Costa Rica amounted to 13,999 persons and 16,158 persons in Honduras in 2015.

The prison population is defined as the total number of adult and juvenile prisoners (including pre-trial detainees), including offenders held in Prison Administration facilities, other facilities, institutions for juvenile offenders and for drug addicts and psychiatric or other hospitals.
