Based on a comparison of 14 banks in Italy in 2018, UniCredit SpA had the most employees, followed by Intesa Sanpaolo and Cassa Depositi e Prestiti.

UniCredit SpA employed 97,775 persons in 2018, down 5.78% when compared to the previous year. Historically, the bank's workforce hit an all time high of 174,519 persons in 2008 and an all time low of 16,011 in 1992.

Average cost reached EUR 5,486 per month per month per employee, 1.42% less than a year ago. This figure was EUR 4,787 per month some 10 years ago.

Comparing UniCredit SpA with its closest peers, Intesa Sanpaolo had 92,117 employees with average cost of EUR 5,366 per month per person, Cassa Depositi e Prestiti operated with 32,020 people (and EUR 5,093 per month per employee) and Monte dei Paschi di Siena had 23,129 employees in 2018 with cost EUR 23,129 per month per head.
