Based on a comparison of 18 banks in Poland, PKO BP produced the highest net profit in 2017, followed by Santander Bank Polska and Pekao.

PKO BP made a net profit of PLN 3,371 mil, up 20.2% compared to the previous year. Historically, the bank’s net profit reached an all time high of PLN 3,780 mil in 2012 and an all time low of PLN 1,051 mil in 2002. The average profit in the last five years amounted to PLN 3,057 mil.

The bank generated an average return on equity of 10.6% for its shareholders in the last five years with a maximum of 12.4% and a minimum of 8.93%.

Comparing PKO BP with its closest peers, Santander Bank Polska generated a net profit of PLN 2,197 mil with a ROE of 9.91% in 2017, Pekao netted PLN 2,131 mil (ROE of 9.23%) and ING Bank Slaski announced a net profit of PLN 1,424 mil giving a ROE of 12.8%.

The net profit of the Poland’s banking sector amounted to PLN 75,354 mil in 2017, up 1.97% compared to the previous year. Heading up the rankings, PKO BP accounted for 4.47% of the sector’s net profit in 2017. The top 3 companies held a 10.2% share while the five largest firms some 13.5% in 2017.
