What Banks in Vietnam Had the Most Bad Loans in 2018?

Based on a comparison of 15 banks in Vietnam in 2018, Vietnam Prosperity Bank had the highest share of bad loans, followed by SHB Bank and Vietnam International Bank.

Vietnam Prosperity Bank's non-performing loans reached 3.50% of total loans at the end of 2018, up from 3.39% when compared to the previous year. Historically, the NPL ratio hit an all time high of 3.50% in 2018 and an all time low of 1.82% in 2011.

Provision coverage amounted to 2.40% at the end of 2018, up from 2.33% compared to a year earlier.

Comparing Vietnam Prosperity Bank with its closest peers, SHB Bank operated at the end of 2018 with NPL ratio of 2.40% and provision coverage of 57.7%, Vietnam International Bank with 2.30% and 39.8% and Sacombank had 2.13% of bad loans covered with 64.5% by provisions at the end of 2018.

Non-performing loans of the whole Vietnam’s banking sector amounted to 1.80% of total loans in 2018, down from 1.82% when compared to the last year.
