Based on a comparison of 28 countries in 2014, Russia ranked the highest in buckwheat production with 661,764 tonnes followed by China and Ukraine. On the other end of the scale was Kyrgyzstan with 22.0 tonnes, Slovakia with 67.0 tonnes and Georgia with 109 tonnes.
Total buckwheat production reached 2,273,749 tonnes in 2014 in the World according to Faostat. This is 12 % less than in the previous year and -1.23 % less than 10 years ago.
Historically, total buckwheat production reached an all time high of 4,968,433 tonnes in 1992 and an all time low of 1,449,651 tonnes in 2010. The average annual growth amounted to -0.163 % since 1961.
The top ranked country, Russia, accounted for 29.1 % of buckwheat production in the world. The top 3 countries hold a 61.3 % share while the ten largest countries some 81.3 % in 2014.
