Based on a comparison of 42 countries in 2018, Nigeria ranked the highest in yam production with 47,533 kt followed by Ghana and Ivory Coast. On the other end of the scale was Trinidad and Tobago with 0.029 kt, Belize with 0.037 kt and Nicaragua with 1.00 kt.

Total yam production reached 72,581 kt in 2018 in the World according to Faostat. This is 0.64 % less than in the previous year and 27.2 % more than 10 years ago.

Historically, total yam production reached an all time high of 73,706 kt in 2016 and an all time low of 8,314 kt in 1962. The average annual growth amounted to 3.87 % since 1961.
