Protecting the environment is a theme that runs through many of the new Global Goals for Sustainable Development. The Environmental Performance Index (EPI) ranks how well countries perform on high-priority environmental issues in two broad policy areas: protection of human health from environmental harm and protection of eco-systems.
Eight of the top 10 countries are found in Europe, with Singapore and Australia completing the top of the ranking. According to the EPI, it is Switzerland, which protects its environment the most. Swiss environmental policy has achieved many successes since the 1980s and reduced the pollution of the environment by certain contaminants. As a result, the country's air quality has improved considerably over the past 25 years.
