Based on a comparison of 18 banks in Poland in 2017, Santander Bank Polska was the most cost efficient bank, followed by Pekao SA and ING Bank Slaski.

Santander Bank Polska's cost to income ratio reached 43.4% in 2017, down from 46.5% when compared to the last year. Historically, the bank’s costs reached an all time high of 79.8% in 2001 and an all time low of 43.4% in 2017.

When compared to total assets, bank's cost amounted to 1.39% in 2017, down from 2.39% a year earlier.

Comparing Santander Bank Polska with its closest peers, Pekao SA operated in 2017 with a cost to income ratio of 44.8%, ING Bank Slaski reached 44.8% and mBank some 45.9%.

The average cost to income ratio reached 45.2% in the Polish banking sector in 2017.

PKO BP made a net profit of PLN 3,104 mil, up 8.00% compared to the previous year. Historically, the bank’s net profit reached an all time high of PLN 3,807 mil in 2011 and an all time low of PLN 887 mil in 2001. The average profit in the last five years amounted to PLN 3,012 mil.

The bank generated an average return on equity of 10.5% for its shareholders in the last five years with a maximum of 13.0% and a minimum of 9.02%.

Comparing PKO BP with its closest peers, Pekao SA generated a net profit of PLN 2,475 mil with a ROE of 10.7% in 2017, Santander Bank Polska netted PLN 2,213 mil (ROE of 9.98%) and ING Bank Slaski announced a net profit of PLN 1,403 mil giving a ROE of 12.6%.

The net profit of the Poland’s banking sector amounted to PLN 75,316 mil in 2017, up 2.44% compared to the previous year. Heading up the rankings, PKO BP accounted for 4.12% of the sector’s net profit in 2017. The top 3 companies held a 10.3% share while the five largest firms some 13.7% in 2017.

When compared to total assets, bank's cost amounted to 1.39% in 2016, down from 1.96% a year earlier.

Comparing Pekao SA with its closest peers, Bank Millennium operated in 2016 with a cost to income ratio of 45.0%, mBank reached 45.7% and Santander Bank Polska some 46.5%.
