Historically, number of banks in Germany reached an all time high of 4,659 banks in 1985 and an all time low of 252 banks in 2004. When compared to Germany's main peers, number of banks in Austria amounted to 38.0 banks, 87.0 banks in Belgium, 259 banks in France and 64.0 banks in Poland in 2018.
