Number of banks reached 117 banks in 2018 in Japan, according to the National Central Bank. This is the same as in the previous year.
Historically, number of banks in Japan reached an all time high of 155 banks in 1989 and an all time low of 117 banks in 2014. When compared to Japan's main peers, number of banks in China amounted to 192 banks, 440 banks in Russia, 56.0 banks in South Korea and 4,686 banks in USA in 2018.
