Historically, number of prisoners in Belgium reached an all time high of 12,126 persons in 2013 and an all time low of 5,963 persons in 1991. When compared to Belgium's main peers, number of prisoners in France amounted to 66,678 persons, 63,020 persons in Germany, 691 persons in Luxembourg and 10,850 persons in Netherlands in 2015.
Belgium has been ranked 50th within the group of 105 countries we follow in terms of number of prisoners, 20 places above the position seen 10 years ago.
The prison population is defined as the total number of adult and juvenile prisoners (including pre-trial detainees), including offenders held in Prison Administration facilities, other facilities, institutions for juvenile offenders and for drug addicts and psychiatric or other hospitals.
