Sales of new cars increased by 460 thousand in May compared to last year. In the first five months of the year, the growth reached 31.1% yoy . The smallest decline was seen in the United Kingdom (674%) while sales in Belgium dropped the most (0.242%). Volkswagen Group sold the most cars in May 2021 in Europe, some 304 thousand vehicles representing 28.0% of the European market.

In May, most vehicles (231 thousand) were sold in Germany (up 37.2% yoy), followed by the United Kingdom (157 thousand, up 674%), Italy with 143 thousand cars (up 43.1%), 141 thousand new vehicles were registered in France (up 46.4%) and 95.4 thousand in Spain (up 178%). The five largest countries accounted for 61.9% of total new vehicles registered in May 2021.

In relative terms, sales in United Kingdom (+674%) and Ireland (+239%) declined the least compared to a year ago, whereas registration in Belgium and Slovenia dropped the most (0.242% and 3.44% yoy), in May 2021, according to ACEA.

Volkswagen Group sold the most cars in May 2021 in Europe, some 304 thousand vehicles representing 28.0% of the European market. Sales of PSA Group amounted to 155 thousand vehicles (or 14.3% of the market) while Renault Group and Hyundai Group held 8.30% and 8.10% of the European market in May. Overall, the five largest manufacturers sold 65.9% of all new cars in May.
