Based on a comparison of 11 banks in Bulgaria in 2017, United Bulgarian Bank had the highest share of bad loans, followed by First Investment Bank and Piraeus Bank Bulgaria.

United Bulgarian Bank's non-performing loans reached 23.6% of total loans at the end of 2017, down from 27.7% when compared to the previous year. Historically, the NPL ratio hit an all time high of 27.7% in 2016 and an all time low of 0.858% in 2008.

Provision coverage amounted to 17.6% at the end of 2017, down from 19.3% compared to a year earlier.

Comparing United Bulgarian Bank with its closest peers, First Investment Bank operated at the end of 2017 with NPL ratio of 17.6% and provision coverage of 59.3%, Piraeus Bank Bulgaria with 15.1% and 46.6% and DSK Bank had 11.2% of bad loans covered with 92.3% by provisions at the end of 2017.

Non-performing loans of the whole Bulgaria’s banking sector amounted to 10.4% of total loans in 2017, down from 13.2% when compared to the last year.
