Based on a comparison of 33 countries in 2014, Spain ranked the highest in virgin olive oil production with 1,738,600 tonnes followed by Italy and Greece. On the other end of the scale was Malta with 4.00 tonnes, Montenegro with 180 tonnes and Mexico with 250 tonnes.
Total virgin olive oil production reached 3,414,847 tonnes in 2014 in the World according to Faostat. This is 17.3 % more than in the previous year and 14.8 % more than 10 years ago.
Historically, total virgin olive oil production reached an all time high of 3,488,907 tonnes in 2012 and an all time low of 931,298 tonnes in 1962. The average annual growth amounted to 1.75 % since 1961.
The top ranked country, Spain, accounted for 50.9 % of virgin olive oil production in the world. The top 3 countries hold a 65.7 % share while the ten largest countries some 84.4 % in 2014.
