Historically, patent applications of non-residents in New Zealand reached an all time high of 8,259 in 1997 and an all time low of 1,866 in 1993. When compared to New Zealand's main peers, patent applications of non-residents in Australia amounted to 26,926, 6,851 in Indonesia, 5,839 in Malaysia and 3,517 in Philippines in 2020.
