Based on a comparison of 20 banks in Austria, Erste Group Bank produced the highest net profit in 2016, followed by Erste Bank Austria and BAWAG Group.

Erste Group Bank made a net profit of EUR 1,473 mil, up 25.6% compared to the previous year. Historically, the bank’s net profit reached an all time high of EUR 1,473 mil in 2016 and an all time low of EUR -105 mil in 2014. The average profit in the last five years amounted to EUR 778 mil.

The bank generated an average return on equity of 5.10% for its shareholders in the last five years with a maximum of 9.38% and a minimum of -0.744%.

Comparing Erste Group Bank with its closest peers, Erste Bank Austria generated a net profit of EUR 510 mil with a ROE of 10.3% in 2016, BAWAG Group netted EUR 474 mil (ROE of 15.6%) and Raiffeisen Bank Int. announced a net profit of EUR 396 mil giving a ROE of 4.47%.

The net profit of the Austria’s banking sector amounted to EUR 4,297 mil in 2016, down 33.3% compared to the previous year. Heading up the rankings, Erste Group Bank accounted for 34.3% of the sector’s net profit in 2016. The top 3 companies held a 57.2% share while the five largest firms some 71.7% in 2016.
