Based on a comparison of 18 banks in Poland, PKO BP produced the highest net profit in 2016, followed by Pekao and Santander Bank Polska.

PKO BP made a net profit of PLN 2,805 mil, down 6.38% compared to the previous year. Historically, the bank’s net profit reached an all time high of PLN 3,780 mil in 2012 and an all time low of PLN 1,051 mil in 2002. The average profit in the last five years amounted to PLN 3,139 mil.

The bank generated an average return on equity of 11.8% for its shareholders in the last five years with a maximum of 16.0% and a minimum of 8.93%.

Comparing PKO BP with its closest peers, Pekao generated a net profit of PLN 2,284 mil with a ROE of 9.86% in 2016, Santander Bank Polska netted PLN 1,931 mil (ROE of 9.29%) and mBank announced a net profit of PLN 1,199 mil giving a ROE of 9.47%.

The net profit of the Poland’s banking sector amounted to PLN 73,898 mil in 2016, up 11.3% compared to the previous year. Heading up the rankings, PKO BP accounted for 3.80% of the sector’s net profit in 2016. The top 3 companies held a 9.50% share while the five largest firms some 12.6% in 2016.
