What Banks in Turkey Had the Most Bad Loans in 2016?

Based on a comparison of 21 banks in Turkey in 2016, HSBC Bank Turkey had the highest share of bad loans, followed by Odea Bank and Turkland Bank.

HSBC Bank Turkey's non-performing loans reached 9.45% of total loans at the end of 2016, up from 5.85% when compared to the previous year. Historically, the NPL ratio hit an all time high of 11.0% in 2009 and an all time low of 1.59% in 2004.

Provision coverage amounted to 9.07% at the end of 2016, up from 6.46% compared to a year earlier.

Comparing HSBC Bank Turkey with its closest peers, Odea Bank operated at the end of 2016 with NPL ratio of 9.07% and provision coverage of 43.8%, Turkland Bank with 6.46% and 37.3% and Sekerbank had 6.06% of bad loans covered with 46.2% by provisions at the end of 2016.

Non-performing loans of the whole Turkey’s banking sector amounted to 3.11% of total loans in 2016, up from 2.99% when compared to the last year.
