Number of maritime oil tankers reached 6,098 vessels in 2011 in Japan, according to the National Statistical Office. This is 21.3 % more than in the previous year.
Historically, number of maritime oil tankers in Japan reached an all time high of 14,267 vessels in 1990 and an all time low of 3,896 vessels in 2009. When compared to Japan's main peers, number of maritime oil tankers in China amounted to 11,702 vessels, 2,006 vessels in Russia, 1,470 vessels in South Korea and 3,949 vessels in USA in 2011.
