Number of prisoners reached 3,203 persons in 2015 in Denmark, according to the United Nations. This is 10.6 % less than in the previous year.
Historically, number of prisoners in Denmark reached an all time high of 4,091 persons in 2013 and an all time low of 3,170 persons in 1997. When compared to Denmark's main peers, number of prisoners in Germany amounted to 63,020 persons, 10,850 persons in Netherlands and 5,543 persons in Sweden in 2015.
Denmark has been ranked 85th within the group of 105 countries we follow in terms of number of prisoners, 13 places above the position seen 10 years ago.
The prison population is defined as the total number of adult and juvenile prisoners (including pre-trial detainees), including offenders held in Prison Administration facilities, other facilities, institutions for juvenile offenders and for drug addicts and psychiatric or other hospitals.
