Sales of new cars decreased by 104 thousand in July compared to last year. In the first seven months of the year, the decline reached 13.3% yoy . The smallest decline was seen in Portugal (17.6%) while sales in Lithuania dropped the most (-34.3%). Volkswagen Group sold the most cars in July 2022 in Europe, some 233 thousand vehicles representing 26.7% of the European market.

In July 2022, new car registrations in the EU decreased 10.4% yoy, despite an already low base of comparison caused by the ongoing semiconductor shortage. All the four major EU markets performed worse than one year ago.

In July, most vehicles (206 thousand) were sold in Germany (down 12.9% yoy), followed by the United Kingdom (112 thousand, down 9.03%), Italy with 110 thousand cars (down 0.774%), 108 thousand new vehicles were registered in France (down 7.06%) and 73.4 thousand in Spain (down 12.5%). The five largest countries accounted for 61.2% of total new vehicles registered in July 2022.

In relative terms, sales in Portugal (+17.6%) and Sweden (+6.29%) declined the least compared to a year ago, whereas registration in Lithuania and Estonia dropped the most (-34.3% and -32.1% yoy), in July 2022, according to ACEA.

Volkswagen Group sold the most cars in July 2022 in Europe, some 233 thousand vehicles representing 26.7% of the European market. Sales of PSA Group amounted to 118 thousand vehicles (or 13.5% of the market) while Hyundai Group and Renault Group held 10.5% and 9.60% of the European market in July. Overall, the five largest manufacturers sold 68.0% of all new cars in July.
