Government expenditure as a share of GDP reached 17.0 % in 2019 in Iran, according to the National Statistical Office. This is 5.76 % less than in the previous year.
Historically, government expenditure as a share of GDP in Iran reached an all time high of 32.9 % in 1993 and an all time low of 14.3 % in 2012. When compared to Iran's main peers, government expenditure as a share of GDP in Iraq amounted to 35.6 %, 22.0 % in Pakistan and 13.6 % in Turkmenistan in 2019.
Iran has been ranked 153rd within the group of 172 countries we follow in terms of government expenditure as a share of GDP, 17 places behind the position seen 10 years ago.
Government expenditure (or spending) includes all government consumption and investment but excludes transfer payments made by a state.
