National Bank of Greece's non-performing loans reached 42.5% of total loans at the end of 2015-12-31, up from 24.3% compared to the previous year. Historically, the NPL ratio hit an all time high of 48.6% in 2015-09-30 and an all time low of 4.10% in 2008-12-31.
Provision coverage amounted to 74.6% at the end of 2015-12-31, up from 59.3% compared to a year earlier.
The bank created loan loss provisions worth of 7.46% of average loans in 2015-12-31. That's compared to 8.80% of loans the bank put aside to its cost on average in the last five years.
Comparing National Bank of Greece with its closest peers, Alpha Bank Group operated at the end of 2015-12-31 with NPL ratio of 39.2% and provision coverage of 52.7%, Piraeus Bank Group with 39.5% and 65.0% respectively and Eurobank Group had 33.8% of bad loans covered with 67.4% by provisions at the end of 2015-12-31.
