Based on a comparison of 55 countries in 2022, China ranked the highest in horse meat production with 159,069 tonnes followed by Kazakhstan and Mongolia. On the other end of the scale was Luxembourg with 1.40 tonnes, Bosnia and Herzegovina with 4.93 tonnes and Madagascar with 5.35 tonnes.

Total horse meat production reached 775,543 tonnes in 2022 in the World according to Faostat. This is 2.29 % more than in the previous year and 5.63 % more than 10 years ago.

Historically, total horse meat production reached an all time high of 796,114 tonnes in 2020 and an all time low of 454,090 tonnes in 1983. The average annual growth amounted to 0.537 % since 1961.

The top ranked country, China, accounted for 20.5 % of horse meat production in the world. The top 3 countries hold a 51.4 % share while the ten largest countries some 82.4 % in 2022.
